Time signatures appear at the beginning of a song next to the clef, and tell you how many beats are in each measure, and what note receives the beat.                                    --->

You will also find the key signature next to the clef, which is a group of sharps or flats that tells you what key a song is in, and what notes are in that key.

The order of sharps and flats is important to remember.  Here are mnemonic devices to remember both:

For flats:

Flowers Bloom Early And Don't Generally Complain 
F (1 x flat) 
Bb (2 x flats) 
Eb (3) 
Ab (4) 
Db (5) 
Gb (6) 
Cb (7) 

Then for sharps:

Good Dogs Always Eat Biscuits For Crunching 

G (1 sharp) 
D (2 sharps) 
A (3) 
E (4) 
B (5) 
F# (6) 
C# (7)
